How Auckland's 2023 Floods Changed How We Work
In January and February 2023, Auckland experienced its worst flooding in living memory. First the Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods, then Cyclone Gabrielle — two events that tested every emergency service in the region, including ours.
Our team responded immediately. Within hours of the first flood warnings, we had additional trucks pre-positioned across the city. Over the following weeks, we recovered more than 200 flood-damaged vehicles from waterlogged streets, carparks, and driveways across South Auckland, the CBD, and the West.
What the floods taught us
Working in flood conditions is unlike any normal towing job. Water-damaged vehicles require careful handling — improper towing can cause further engine damage or create hazards for other road users. Our team trained specifically for these conditions, and that training paid off.
We also learned the importance of communication. During a disaster, people are stressed and often don't know where their vehicle has gone or what to do next. We set up a dedicated flood response line and worked closely with Auckland Emergency Management to help residents track their vehicles.
The community response
What struck us most was the resilience of Aucklanders. People looked out for their neighbours, shared information, and remained remarkably calm in extraordinarily difficult circumstances. It was a privilege to play a small part in helping people get back on their feet.
